A few years ago, when the first generation of “new tango dancers” showed up, there was a riot in the milonga. This “organic” dancers introduced a way of dancing that defied the parameters established by traditional argentine tango: open embrace, plenty of ganchos and boleos of all sorts, and aesthetics waaay too different from that of classic dancers.
As time went by, waters settled down, and many traditional dancers adopted techniques from “new” tango, and on the other hand “new tango” dancers began to close the embrace and tried to put more tango in their movements.
Ariadna Naveira and Fernando Sanchez are part of the new generation of tango dancers, they are what many people consider the future of tango, but that actually have been around for many years now.
Ariadna is the daughter of Gustavo Naveira (who is considered the father of new tango) and Olga Besio, which means that probably in her first ultrasound scan she was already doing ”cruzadas.” On the other hand Fernando with only 26 years, already has a well-known international career.
Although the couple has been together for a relatively short period of time, they already show a maturity and connection as if they have been dancing together for years. This is clear in the video presented here, where even though you will see a couple that can be consider inside the new trends in tango, you won’t see an excess in ganchos or boleos, nor flamboyant steps; but a flexible and most of the time closed embrace, and a special stress on musicality. A great performance not of new tango, or classic tango, but rather Tango with a capital T.
This video was recorded on November 6th in Istanbul Tango Ritual 2009. The music is “la Colegiala” by the orchestra of E.Rodríguez
